NCAA coverage preference: Routines or Falls? |

I was disappointed in the CBS NCAA coverage of the championships because of how many routines with falls were shown instead of the actual routines which
counted toward the scoring. Many of the routines shown were not in the count. I would have liked to have seen what the real competition included instead of
the frustration/pain of highly accomplished athletes having an off routine for whatever reason. It was really frustrating to watch knowing this was not a true
representation of the event or the athletes.

I think this year more than ever they showed partial routines, or routines "in progress." I don't necessarily have a problem with the clips of
the falls, but there were just too many partial routines. I'd certainly prefer more routines over less commentary, but knowing that we'll probably
always have to have some amount of that, maybe they could put the commentary in a little box on the bottom of the screen. I'd even settle for extra
routines in a little box, at least over not seeing them at all. Maybe they could have a split screen and show two routines at once - that is, if they needed
the time to fit more in.
I was disappointed they didn't show Baskett's floor ex, except for about a 5 second clip of it just before rotation 4. I would think if they showed any Ute fx routine in full it should be hers ! |

I suppose they show the falls to make the storyline flow. Georgia started rocky, so they show Newby's routine.... have to mention the tie from Thursday, so
they show Deetscreek fall in prelims to tell that story, they showed Ark. & LSU doing well early, so showed errors later to take them out of the picture. I
think they give us partial routines so that you get more girls/schools shown, and don't worry so much that the rabid gym fan wants the whole routine. What
would you think if they'd sort of introduced the meet by showing some coverage of LSU, Ark, and UF telling us how they did and why in a sort of recap, then
focused the coverage on the top 3 teams? Would that "ruin" the drama for the casual fan?
On the frivolous side - I loved seeing Utah's leos from a good camera up close. Very nice! LSU should get a purple/gold/black version of it. On the "ah ha" moment side of things - the angle of viewing does make a huge difference in things. I thought Georgia's beam looked VERY different viewed from the side rather than straight down the beam like the YouTube videos have. There were issues we've talked to death that were much less intrusive/obvious from the cameraman's floor level, side on view (at least to me, I'm sure others will disagree). And I don't like the rafter view of bars being used all the time. That angle might be interesting if you zoomed in a little, but I don't want to be on the catwalk with the camera guy there. Way to go moment - that they went back to Bijak's FX to show the first pass and praise it for it's difficulty and unique-ness! Funny (to me) moment - that GA's FX music was playing in the background of various routines and the way CBS editted the show we heard GA's rotation as Stack, Mauro, Taylor, McComb, Taylor, McComb, etc, saw Tolnay in background, Kupets in background, then got over to them eventually. I'm sure this happened elsewhere, but these audios were noticeable to me. Laugh out loud moment - after McComb's beam, "it's hard to be up first on this event." I'm sure it is. Especially when you are up second :-) Just my thoughts... |

I know CBS is there to tell the whole story but gee- please show the routines instead of Georgia standing around. I would say this even if I was a Ga fan. I
think anyone who loves gymnastics would agree that they would rather see more routines than people standing there. All of Bamas floor routines except for
Morgans were partials. I guess they felt the meet was decided by then.

ItsNastiaFan101 is beginning to get the coverage posted today. As of my writing, there are 5 parts (about 50 minutes worth) of the coverage up.
First section is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCM-hr-06d8 Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k6rFc1Xbm8 Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVDgGe86xRc Part 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymJBp-r4fzc Part 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v25Zrt3yZc |

One thing that I was disappointed about was that at the beginning of the coverage, when the teams were psyching themselves up before the meet, Arkansas was NOT
shown among them. Later, just before a commercial break, each of the teams were shown in group setting and, once again, the Gymbacks were left out. Didn't
CBS know that this was the Super Six and not the Super FIVE?
Also, shame on CBS for screwing up Kyndal Robarts' name! Displayed on the screen, it was spelled Roberts and even pronounced RAH-berts by Tim Brando. Kyndal's last name has an A, not an E, and is pronounced RO-barts! |

Well, if they were taking their cues from the announcer in Lincoln, it's a wonder they pronounced anyone's names right! This was a huge pet peeve of
mine at this year's nationals. The announcer butchered MANY names, even Friday and Saturday nights. (You'd think someone would have bothered to correct
him by then.) As just a "small" example, (and one of many), he pronounced Courtney Kupets' last name wrong, every time!! It's really too bad
that they aren't given pronunciation lists.

FYI, they didn't use a cameraman on a catwalk. They had a long boom with a moveable camera on it that could be extended high and on top of the bars. We
called it "fishing for gymnasts."

I felt the same way about the part with the girls just standing together before one of the commercials. Some teams had 6 girls, some 4 and Georgia had the whole team. I love Georgia, but they should all have had the same number or girls or the entire team. They've all worked hard to get there. |

I agree. I totally felt like Arkansas was again treated like the ugly step-sister. They only showed a couple of the girls--never showed Sarah or Mollie.
They did show Casey Jo's floor routine at the end. Seems like the only floor routines shown in their entirity were Kupets, Tolnay, etc. Yes, these girls
are good and deserved the kudos received, but so did the Arkansas girls--all of them. I mean, here you have 5 teams (Georgia, Utah, Alabama, Florida & LSU)
who have all been to the big dance before. But here is Arkansas---another SEC school---who has made it to the Super Six after having only been in existance for
7 years. For pete's sake, give them the kudos they deserve and focus a little bit of airtime on them and their story. This year was not a fluke by any
chance. Arkansas is darn good and they will be back and next time they won't finish 5th!!! There will be another SEC winner, but it won't be Alabama,
Florida, Georgia or even LSU. You mark my word!!! |

If you watch every year, they never show all of the teams equal. The point of the coverage is to tell the story of what happened and show the outcome(aka the
winner). It is not a recap for all of us fans that already know the results. It is catered to the casual fans who just care about who wins. It has always
been like this. I did not count the routines but I felt like Arkansas got about the same coverage as LSU and Florida(the other teams to finish in the bottom
half). I'm not sure there was any team that had every gymnast showcased. As an Auburn fan I have experienced this with the SECs but realize that because
we have not been in strong contention for the title we are given less coverage to make room for the top teams. It makes better TV!
I agree that Arkansas is up and coming but someone else from the SEC(Georgia or Bama) will win before they will. Personally, I have always thought that Florida would be the next team to join the small group of national champions. With next years senior class(Sinclair, Smith and a healthy Castillo and Zaiser) they should be one to watch out for. Just my two cents. |

I spent a part of my afternoon avoiding my real work and counted routines. It's interesting, because I wouldn't have really come up with these numbers
by my feelings about the broadcast. Between CBS talking about Kupets with her all-around win and the 10s during the season, then talking abouther again during
them telling about EF, and the other Yoculan feature, there really was a lot of UGA footage shown.
Here's my count: UGA - 16 routines, featuring 9 gymnasts - 4 of Tolnay, 4 of Kupets AL - 14 routines, featuring 8 gymnasts - 4 of Dennis, 3 of Priess UT - 15 routines, featuring 8 gymnasts - 4 of Kim, 3 of Baskett (with 1 FX pass in the clips) FL - 11 routines, featuring 6 gymnasts - 3 of Gladys, 3 of Hartung ARK - 9 routines, featuring 7 gymnasts - 2 each of Magee and Pisani LSU - 10 routines, featuring 7 gymnasts - 2 each of Schwitkis (sp?), ACK, and Jackson Complete routines - 3 on FX - GA's Kupets, FL's Smith, AL's Dennis I was counting this at the time, but I think the only complete BB sets were Kupets and Baskett. Having paid more attention to WHO was competing rather than HOW they competed, some of the broadcast choices seem odd to me. Do you suppose that next year we could ask CBS to have a fan poll of what routines we want to see? Don't networks love call in fan polls? And last, wouldn't it be cool for CBS to make a fluff piece on the difficult/unusual skills thrown during Prelims/EFs? A highlights reel of the weekend if you will.... As I said, it really was much more 'well-rounded' than it felt to me. |
