More schools picking up the sport would mean more scholarship opportunities at different institutions. As a result, more people would be interested in putting their kids in gymnastics because there are more academic opportunities available and gymnastics will no longer just be about life sacrifice to get to the Olympics. Consequently, public interest would generally increase which is only good for the sport.

A good example of this is wrestling. Wrestling is extraordinarily popular in the United States not just because little boys want to go to the Olympics but because so many higher education institutions offer the sport and scholarships for it. Therefore, a lot of high school and middle school kids and their parents are interested in it because they know it could potentially offer them free access to a collegiate education.
