Southern Utah is good and has had a great season, but if I'm Alabama and Michigan I'm smiling right now knowing just an average meet from both of them gets them to Nationals.

Not sure exactly what your definition of "average" is, but I think that is assuming a lot.  SUU has looked pretty good all year, and their RQS is very close to the "average" score of AL and MI, which says to me that they are quite capable of hitting that and making the meet very interesting if the higher seeded teams don't bring their A game.  They better not overlook Regionals, or they could be in for a shorter post season than they would like.
These days I don't think there are too many teams below the top 3 maybe who can smile when they contemplate their regional competition.  I know I am not assuming anything for my favorite team.
