Has anyone ever been involved in a shooting? |

Have any of you ever been involved in a shooting or hostage situation? I ask because this past Tuesday night, my bowling team and I were at the bowling alley
for league night when a group of men came in the front door and opened fire. They shot about 7-10 times (that I heard), and people were lying all over the
floor and my first thought was that everyone near the door was dead. I grabbed my teammates and pushed everyone through a side door to get out, only to come
across the gunmen trying to flee the scene. We thought they were still inside and we weren't sure how many of them there were. Fortunately, no one was
killed, but it was still an extremely frightening situation. One of my teammates is already a high strung person and is now extremely jumpy and won't go
anywhere without an escort. I know it will take time for him to feel more comfortable, but I have no idea what to do for him. Just wondering if anyone else has
gone through this sort of thing and what did you do to get over it? Thanks in advance.

That is awful and frightening. What part of town were you in? Do you know if they were looking for anyone in particular?
You might want to write to my friend who used to post here as "Tide Fan." He was beaten over the head, robbed and had a gun pulled on him several years back. He got away. The address is 'matbeach1@yahoo.com.' |

Thanks Kristy. Yeah, it was in Atlanta in midtown at Midtown Bowl located at the intersections of Piedmont, Cheshire Bridge and Monroe. We bowl every Tuesday,
so we're going back tonight and there's a team captain meeting. I think it's to discuss kicking the guy off the league that refuses to give up the
gunman's name. Someone said they are bringing in plain clothed officer's if the guys come back.

Hey,
Good luck with that. It's scary--we used to spend a lot of time down there around the Ansley mall area. |

Have been there a few times too. I can't bowl though. That would take too much coordination.

....although I've basically watched one person die from multiple gunshots, and watched another who sustained serious injuries in a separate shooting.
It's part of my job to be at those scenes, it's different when I'm at work...it's different when I have to point a gun at someone. I've had my finger moving towards the trigger, fortunately the subject complied. I'd just suggest seeking some sort of counseling. Everyone is different, not everyone can do what I do because it takes a certain ability to disconnect. Have him talk to a counselor or therapist, it will help.

Thanks guys. You've all been very helpful. This week, when we went back, the bowling alley said they weren't allowed to talk about the shooting or give
any details. Are you kidding me? That's the only information you can give us is that you can't give us any info on whether the shooter was caught or
what you're doing to prevent this type of thing from happening again? Ridiculous!

Why would someone refuse to give up the shooters name? Was anyone shot or injured? He will be an accomplice if the shooter is caught, right? I think the term
would be accessory after the crime, maybe?

I've never had a gun pointed at me but my sister 10 years ago, while making a bank deposit for her office, was told to drop her money bag, not move, or she
would die. The armed and masked guy picked up the money and ran to a waiting car. She was okay, but an emotional wreck for weeks. She fortunately got some
counseling. It helped a lot, and says is no longer haunted by the incident anymore. She did say that getting through it made her more appreciative of life in
general, and is doing great.
So I agree with Diehard that counseling will help. Your jumpy friend and maybe others may have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and should consider being evaluated. In my job as an HR and Risk Management consultant, I've often spoken to victims of shootings. In many cases, the body heals long before the mind does, if at all. So thank God you're okay. I wouldn't go back to the scene until I felt it was safe and I was mentally ready. I'd tell them to screw themselves if they thought we shoudln't talk about it. The bowling alley is probably trying to keep bad press down to a minimum or people might stop coming in to bowl. Ignoring what happened and making no changes could mean it could happen again.. And BigB00882, I don't know the dynamanic of this incident. But squealing or revealing the name of the shooter could cause infinite death threats against the squealer and his loved ones. Sometimes as has happened in LA, one person has the guts to do the right thing, squeal, put several people in prison, and get their neighborhoods back. |
