Registered Member Posts: 138 Aug 9 10 7:17 AM	Tags : None Remove this ad My friend and I, who is a big elite gymnastics fan, were talking and got on the subject of elites who hadn't gone pro (ie still had NCAA eligibility) but were currently focusing all effort on the Olympics in 2012. Got into lengthy detail about if Bridget Sloan, Ivana Hong, Rebecca Bross (even pasts like Patteson, Shawn, Luikin, Memmel, any of the magnificent 7) etc. decided to announce intentions to go to college and compete after elite. We wondered who would be the biggest toss up and garner the most interest from everyone. But then i thought, surely something like this has happened before. Shayla Worley? Ashley Priess? Courtney Kupets? Ashley Miles? Mohini Bhardwaj? No one really came to mind as highly publicized recruits that had Florida, Utah, Georgia, Alabama and UCLA fighting tooth and nail to land.

Shannon Miller and Moceanu had already gone pro and decided early in their careers not to do college. I'm not sure if Amy Chow had committed yet, and I belive Kerri Strug was pro. Maloney, Dantzcher, Beckerman from the 2000 team all were committed to doing college at UCLA. Ray to Michigan, Chow and Dawes were pro, Schwikert to young at that point, and I'm not sure about Morgan White. For 2004, Kupets was clear early on she was going to Georgia, Mohini Bhardwaj had already competed college, Humphrey had decided on Alabama, Hatch was pro, McCool was to young, but had indentions, and I'm not sure about what Patterson's plans were. I know from the 2004 hopefuls Ashley Postell had no intentions of NCAA until she failed to qualify for Trials, Heenan had committed to Georgia. For 2008 Johnson, Liukin, Memmel were pro, Sacramone was heading to NCAA, Sloan was too young and had committed to another cycle, and Peszek obviously committed to UCLA. Most top level elites who are going NCAA usually have a good idea early on where they will be attending in my opinion.

Just a couple of corrections - Jaycie Phelps had not committed anywhere (she was young) in 1996. Dawes had committed to Stanford early on, but had backed out and gone pro well before the Olympics. Kerri Strug was committed to UCLA, but went pro after the Olympics. She still went to UCLA and was the team manager for one year before transferring to Stanford. Morgan White went pro and signed a tour contract in early 2000.

I think the point of Ben's question was wondering if there was a "recruiting war" among several schools for each of these athletes. I think Ben realizes that Mohini was done with college by 2004; he's asking if there were any schools rumored to have been "fighting" to "land" her as an athlete at their school. So really he's looking for the schools they were thinking about going to but in the end did NOT end up at, and this thread seems to be a list of "Dawes committed to Stanford" - yeah we know that, but what other schools were "fighting" for her?
