The level of gymnastics is growing and it helps keep college gymnastics alive. I would love for people to discuss their thoughts about Division 3!

I don't think that is fair at all. Have you ever watched D3 gymnastics? D3 gymnasts work out 20 hours, lift, travel to meets, get pushed by their coaches and deal with injuries day in and day out...much like D1 gymnasts but the big difference is D3 gets no scholarships at all for doing their sport...it is all for the love of it. There are also a great deal of D3 schools that have hit the 180 mark already in this early season (Lacrosse, Winona, Eau Claire, Whitewater, etc). All gymnasts no matter what division should be treated with respect for putting their heart into this hard sport.

If you look at stats, a lot of D3 girls are ranked higher than some in D1. The D3 girls get scored lower (more realistically?) than D1. It's a lot of fun & a lot of heart.

A few years back, Julia Zimmerman from MIT won the NCGA all-around title when the D3 nationals were at UW-Whitewater. That year, the way things worked out, she made it to Division 1 regionals as well. There are a number of athletes like Julia who, for whatever reason, chose to go the D3 rather than D1 route. In Julia's case, it was the opportunity to get her education at MIT.

What's most amazing is how far the skill level has come. While bars still lags behind in terms of major releases like D1 athletes (for the most part), vault, beam and floor are often right there with the everyone but the top 12-18 teams (and in some cases, these athletes would made one or two lineups at a bigger school). It is amazing to watch D3 now.

The skill level "spread" between D1 and D3 has definitely shrunk. Now you can see D3 athletes competing full twisting yurchenkos, double pikes on floor, and basically the same beam sets as D1 athletes. It is fun to see!

I agree with Calico --- the main difference is on bars. However, it should be mentioned that the way that these athletes are judged by the D3 judges is much different then how they judge D1 meets. I wish that they would be more consistent---either score everyone how you do D1 athletes, or start judging D1 athletes the same way you score D3. Mayeb then we would be able to see just how close D3 is to D1.

To clarify, D3 is often judged very similarly to how JO competitions are judged. There are certainly exceptions, but on average, the judging is much more strict at D3 and it is at D1.

I agree though that if you take a division three gymnast and put them in a division one meet their scores go way up.

Who is this gymnast you speak of? I can't remember a DIII gymnast ever qualifying to NCAA Championships in the all-around.

Meghan Hargens at UW-Stout did qualify to Regionals the last couple years in the all-around, which was a huge accomplishment for a DIII gymnast - normally if there is a DIII qualifier to Regionals, it's on a single event.

I will agree that there's much less difference from DI to DIII than there used to be for some teams and their top competitors - one of the biggest differences is the number of athletes with DI-level routines. You might see some Yurchenko fulls now in DIII, but you'll never see a team that has six of them. (Nor should you expect to, I'm just saying.)

I do appreciate and enjoy watching DIII meets as much as I do DI meets, so please don't think I'm slamming anyone - but if a "new" gymnastics fan were to read this thread and read how they're "not that much different" I bet they'd be pretty damn shocked if they went to a DIII meet after seeing a DI meet and vice versa.

My biggest problem with DIII is that so many gymnasts attempt skills they are not ready to compete - there are many routines that are beautiful in DIII, but to find those you often have to look through the gymnastics that, for safety reasons, sort of scares you. Much more sacrificing form and technique just to land something.

Obviously the most talented get the scholarships on the top teams. But there are also many walk ons on big teams in D1 who are not there for their talent, but for parental financial donations, high grades, etc. When you move down the line in D1 there are plenty of ladies with the same talent as D3 ladies. D3 gives the opportunity to compete, not just be a cheerleader and mat mover.

Some gymnasts go to the school that fits them best for academics and career aspirations. The gymnastics team is a bonus, but not the be all and end all of college. They may be just as talented but have chosen to emphasize studies rather than sports not only in college, but on the club level.

It was .. Carrie Santore from SUNY Brockport in 2005.

Truth be told, Julia Zimmerman threw gymnastics that deserved to be seen at NCAAs, too.

We hosted a quad meet with 3 D3 teams last weekend. It was a lot of fun for the girls and the fans. There was a lot of great gymnastics going on on every event. We saw some full out dismounts on bars, 10.0 vaults and great floor and beam sets from the D3 teams. They certainly have picked up their skill level over the past few years. Overall it was a great experience for everyone involved.

I have observed judges who normally judge only DI teams get assigned to a DIII meet and they struggle to get the difficulty, start value, and composition correct. With any meet, judges should look for everything--the skills, the special requirements, the composition deductions. It is certainly easier to judge the DI level where most routines start at 10.0 and fulfill composition requirements. One also has more decisions typically to make with DIII athletes--was that skill completed enough for value? Do you award it and take a deduction? Do you award it a lower value and take no deduction?

DIII athletes are wonderful. They put it out there every meet. The improvement over the past few years is profound.

The only way to truly have a level playing field where fans don't complain as much is to have all teams in the same gym judged by the same competent judges.

I follow D3 closely and I saw that one of the judges gave Naomi DeLara from Stout a 9.95 on beam at Iowa yesterday! Keep it up D3!
