Question 1: Is this good for athletic women in general to be on the cover of Playboy?
Question 2: What if a woman gymnast was offered this same thing? BTW, a male gymnast has already posed for Playgirl.

Those of us in So. CAL have loved her for a long time, mainly for her athletic achievements. She's got lots of Olympic medals and a ready smile. If she poses for Playboy, she stands to make lots of money and different future roles. It opens up a wide new world of possible job offers if she plays her cards right. Beard says that an athletic body being attractive to men is a step forward.

If a prominent NCAA gymnast went this route we would never hear the end of the Gymguy80 posts...
More seriously I make the distinction between an individual and a sport using sex appeal for marketing purposes. At the individual level I think I am pretty neutral on this subject... I have never felt the need to condemn any woman for making money off her appearance. It is your image to sell or not sell and it is the individual's "biz." I am either curious enough to look or not, for better or worse I don't think a "classy" Playboy spread is going to discredit a modern woman these days if she is in the entertainment business... If she is majoring in Elementary Education or wants to be a Business Executive it might not be worth the backlash, remember you cant un-take the pictures. Since many famous gymnasts (at the Elite level) are underage the whole using sex-appeal to market gymnastics is different than some other women's sports it is a different kettle of fish compared to say Beach Volleyball. However it seems like half the Romanian National team members over the last 15 years have posed nude (after retiring) and it has not helped or hurt the sport than I can tell. I don't think NCAA gym programs should try to push the sex-appeal aspect. Partly for a back handed reason... NCAA gymnastics is going to have a certain amount of sex appeal just by the nature of the sport. Fit, flexible, and graceful college aged woman performing in leotards are going to naturally have some sex appeal and I don't think helps the sport to push or exaggerate that aspect... I think efforts would be better spent pushing other aspects of the sport. I really don't think athletes, coaches or administrators want to exaggerate or sell sex appeal. If an individual NCAA gymnast posed for Playboy during her career the NCAA cops would be dropping out of the sky... After her career I would go back to my starting point... It would be her business but, I admit would certainly look, joke, and kid about it. However I think if some gal asked my advice I would just as soon take a pass on the guilty pleasure and not have it happen. |

Remember the gymnasts who've said they want to act or model? At the short height the gymnasts are, they really don't have a chance in ramp modelling or acting jobs. Demi Moore is an exception. So you take whatever opportunities that you may get. I think most NCAA women would NOT do it if asked - even if paid $500,000 to do it. But to many other women, being asked to model in that magazine would be a dream. There are no guarantees, but it could kickstart other opportunities (Anna Nicole). I know that for taste and moral reasons, it may not be a popular choice in NCAA's, USAG, clubs, etc.. But if it happens someday, we just better be ready.

LOL, months after not looking at this board, I find an interesting link. She sure looks healthy. I'm sure it will be the hottest issue in all the high school and college swimmng teams and water polo teams everywhere.

So is she actually nude in any of the pictures or is she covering herself up a little like the cover photo? If there's no nudity (or if it's done in a
tasteful, artistic manner) then I don't see a problem with it. One thing our country does is blow nudity and sex a little out of proportion. The body is a
beautiful thing and we all have one. Sex is something that must be done to reproduce yet some act as if it's such a horrible thing and should never be
mentioned. However, I know there are some people who do things in public that we really don't need to see! It's all about class and what's
tasteful, but to each his/her own.
A Happy Person Is Not A Person In A Certain Set Of Circumstances, But Rather A Person With A Certain Set Of Attitudes.

(sorry for bumping old thread but...)
@eliteathlete... she is definitely nude lol. wish i could post for you, but i can't. i think its a good thing as she said "its nice that an athletic woman is attractive to men these days" as long as you don't have the typical american attitude that every star athlete is a patriotic, baptist, girl-next-door type haha.
